a very well-researched indictmentReviewed by Anonymous, 1998-09-22
Jack McGuire, who knew Earl Long personally, thinks Michael Kurtz in his 1990 biography of Long done him wrong. In this work, McGuire proceeds to tear apart piece by piece Kurtz's scholarship, finding errors of both fact and interpretation that send chills down the spine of any writer trying to piece together similar tales of Louisiana history. As a companion piece to Kurtz's book, McGuire's work serves as a powerful illustration of how two respected scholars can come to vastly different conclusions on the same topic. McGuire is one of the most meticulously scathing reviewers I have ever read. His book is also greatly enhanced by a healthy collection of Earl Long photos, many of them never before published in book form. One gets the feeling after reading McGuire's book, that Earl Long would have slapped him on the back, bought him a drink and oozed "That's my boy!"
